Health and Safety policy

Health and Safety Policy for Removal Companies Waterloo

This Health and Safety policy sets out the standards and procedures followed by our removal teams operating in Waterloo and the surrounding area. Our aim is to protect the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, contractors, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our moving and relocation activities.

Commitment to Health and Safety

We are committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all persons involved in or affected by our removal services. Health and safety considerations are integral to planning, supervising and delivering all moves, from small residential removals to larger commercial relocations.

We comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice. We continually review and improve our systems of work to reduce risks associated with lifting, carrying, driving, loading, unloading and working in and around client premises in the Waterloo area.

Management Responsibilities

Company management is responsible for ensuring that effective health and safety arrangements are in place. This includes:

Assessing risks associated with our removal operations and implementing appropriate control measures. Providing suitable equipment, vehicles, tools and personal protective equipment that are maintained in a safe condition. Ensuring that employees receive appropriate training, supervision and information to carry out their duties safely. Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses, and taking corrective action to prevent recurrence. Reviewing this policy and our procedures periodically and updating them as necessary.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must:

Follow all safety procedures, instructions and training provided. Use equipment and vehicles correctly and report any defects immediately. Wear required personal protective equipment where specified. Co operate with management in implementing health and safety measures. Report hazards, near misses, accidents and incidents without delay. Refrain from horseplay, dangerous behaviour or any activity that may compromise safety during removal operations.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Prior to commencing removal work, suitable and proportionate risk assessments are carried out. These consider the nature of the items to be moved, access routes, client premises, traffic conditions, manual handling requirements and any special hazards associated with the job.

Based on these assessments, safe systems of work are developed and communicated to the team. Where necessary, site specific instructions are provided to address particular risks at residential properties, office buildings, storage facilities and loading or unloading locations in and around Waterloo.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a core part of removal work and is managed carefully to reduce the risk of injury. We:

Provide manual handling training for staff, including correct lifting techniques, team lifts and the use of handling aids. Use appropriate equipment such as trolleys, dollies, protective covers, lifting straps and ramps where required. Plan routes in advance to minimise carrying distances, obstacles and the need for awkward lifts. Avoid handling loads that are too heavy or unstable without sufficient personnel or mechanical assistance. Ensure that vehicles are loaded and unloaded to maintain stability and prevent shifting loads.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

Our vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition and are suitable for the types of moves undertaken in the Waterloo area. We ensure that:

Drivers are competent, appropriately licensed and familiar with safe driving practices. Loads are secured properly to prevent movement during transit. Routes are planned where possible to minimise congestion and exposure to traffic risks. Drivers take adequate rest breaks and do not work excessive hours. Parking and loading activities are carried out with consideration for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

Working at Height and Property Protection

Where removal activities involve working at height, on stairs, ramps or uneven surfaces, additional precautions are taken. This includes using suitable equipment such as step ladders or ramps, ensuring good lighting, and maintaining clear access routes.

We take care to protect client property, fixtures and fittings by using covers, floor protection and careful handling methods. Hazards such as loose flooring, low ceilings and tight staircases are identified and controlled as far as reasonably practicable.

Customer and Public Safety

We recognise our responsibility to protect customers, visitors and the public during removal operations in Waterloo. This includes:

Clearly communicating with customers about planned work areas and potential hazards. Keeping access routes as clear as possible and signposting any temporary obstructions. Supervising loading and unloading to prevent unauthorised access to work areas. Taking special care around shared entrances, pavements and communal areas.

Training, Information and Supervision

All staff involved in removal work receive training appropriate to their role, including induction training, manual handling, use of equipment, vehicle safety and emergency procedures. Refresher training is provided as necessary.

Supervisors are appointed where appropriate to oversee jobs, ensure adherence to safe systems of work and provide on site guidance. Health and safety information is communicated clearly so that all team members understand their responsibilities.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during removal work must be reported as soon as possible to the responsible person. These events are recorded, investigated and reviewed in order to identify causes and implement preventive measures.

Emergency procedures are in place for fire, serious injury, vehicle incidents and other foreseeable emergencies. Staff are instructed on how to respond, including raising the alarm, calling emergency services where required and making areas safe.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

We monitor our health and safety performance through incident data, staff feedback and site observations. This information is used to improve our policies, training and working practices.

This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, legal requirements or best practice in the removals industry. Our objective is to provide safe, reliable and professional removal services to customers in Waterloo and the wider area while continually improving our health and safety culture.
